[001] Knowing One's Destiny - The New Journey

Updated: May 11, 2020

Long time no see!

More than four months have passed since the last article was published. You may ask: You used to publish original articles every week, and stopped all of a sudden, what happened? The reason is that my daughter has graduated from high school and is about to enter a new stage of life. My "New Zealand Education" public account has completed its historical mission; without my daughter's school life as material, I must think about the future direction of the public account.

A while ago, many friends were concerned about my daughter ’s university application and admissions. Thanks to their support, I can now happily say that my daughter ’s application and admission work is basically over, and I am deeply proud of her!

The results were excellent. She applied for six of the world's top Anglo-American art colleges, all of which sent her admission notices, and some also provided scholarships of considerable amounts. According to this year's ranking of arts and design colleges by QS World University, most of the schools my daughter applied to are ranked in the top ten in the world, including London University of the Arts (UAL), which ranks first in the world for undergraduates. My daughter had already made up her mind to take the art and design route and being able to enter the world's top art universities has taken her closer to her dream.

I am pleased to see that my daughter has demonstrated strong learning, planning and practical skills in the process of applying to university. Throughout the process, she did everything on her own. She did not ask a special counseling agency to help sort out the application process. All application documents and art works were completed by herself. And she did not even ask an art teacher to provide opinions and references. My daughter collected information from various places and participated in lectures. Sometimes due to jet lag, she would stay up until the middle of the night to participate online in on-site reviews and Q & A’s of art collections held by Anglo-American Universities. As parents, we particularly hope to help our daughter's application for school, but looking back now, our own support was not so crucial and perhaps not as much help to her as we would like to think! My daughter's independence makes me particularly happy.

So, my daughter is about to enter a new stage of her life, and I, just fifty years old today, am thinking: why not start a new journey of my own!

Over the past five years, writing a weekly article in ‘New Zealand Education’ has become part of my daily routine. Although the pressure is not insignificant, it is quite rewarding. The nearly 300 original articles accumulated have not only become a window for thousands of Chinese parents from all over the world to learn about New Zealand education, but also left me with rich memories. The early articles of the public account were edited and published by the Electronic Industry Press as a 400-page book, "Better Education for Children."

Now that the public account has been in my past for more than five years, where is the next one?

After months of thinking, I decided to continue to write in the public account. In terms of content, I will no longer focus on school education in New Zealand, but instead turn to some learning, practice, and perception of my own personal growth.

The public account of [New Zealand Education], which has accompanied you for more than five years, will be renamed to [Sherman Coach Development Journal], but all previous articles on New Zealand education will be kept as they are. Being a coach to help others is the personal growth direction I am setting for myself.

Some people may say, "You are over half a lifetime old. What other personal growth are you talking about?"

I believe you are familiar with the principle of "live to learn and learn". In my opinion, growth is the same, and it is endless. When you find that you have been working hard to achieve a better self, life will become full of vitality.

I have been conducting professional business communication training for multinational companies since 2012, and served as a corporate executive speech coach. Later, I became acquainted with the field of growth coaching. I very much agreed with its philosophy and gradually developed a business of personal growth coaches. I am convinced that coaching conversations can help people sort out ideas and direction, reduce confusion, achieve positive change, and even help people find or strengthen their meaning in life, enrich it, and make it shine!

At the turning point of this public account, you are welcome to read the last article of the [New Zealand Education] public account. This article records a lot of information about the applications to art schools accumulated by my daughter, as well as the experience and precautions one should take note of while applying for school. After carefully sorting her own application out, my daughter intends to use these experiences to help the younger students who need them, and as a way of working hard to help fund future art studies.

In order to support my daughter, if you buy her counseling services for school applications, you will get my one-hour coaching service free. You can let your child in high school talk to me (in Chinese or English), or you can use this for yourself for an hour to experience the benefits of coaching.

The ancients said that fate comes to be known over a time span of fifty years. I understand "Fate" to be the mission given by God. It is something of a deliberate coincidence that I chose my fiftieth birthday to restart the public account - probably destiny too! I hope that my future writings will bring you useful understandings and thoughts in a complicated world.
